Filtration: The Total Picture

Whether your aquarium is marine or freshwater ... 5 gallons or 500 gallons ... a species tank, a seafood tank, an amphibian habitat or a retail aqua system ... water quality is critical. Clean, sparkling water is the mark of a healthy, thriving aquarium. The secret to maintaining optimum water quality in any aquarium is three-stage filtration.

There are three essential water purification stages that determine the success of any aquatic system. First, mechanical filtration — using filter pad, floss or sleeve — screens out large particles of debris and solid waste. Next, chemical filtration utilizes media, like highly (premium) activated carbon, to remove pollutants that can cause discoloration and unpleasant odor. The third and most important step is biological filtration, in which beneficial bacteria eliminate toxic ammonia and nitrite.

That’s total three-stage filtration. And that’s where we come in. Marineland has been developing and improving advanced methods of filtration — and doing it more successfully — for four decades.

The amount of filtration needed to maintain an aquarium depends on a number of variables. These include tank size, individual maintenance habits and fish population. Whatever your individual needs, Marineland has the products that deliver on-target, three-stage filtration.

And whatever your individual experience level, we’ve got loads of basic information to ensure your fishkeeping success. On the page entitled “Your New Aquarium,” you’ll find a user-friendly beginner’s guide to the basics of aquarium setup, care and maintenance.
